Original Mix – Fj Nettlefold by Danny Hyde (Aural Rage) 07.44 minutes, 14.1MB

Background: Danny Hyde is a floating member of the legendary electronics band Coil. He has done some remix work himself including the remix of NIN – The Downward Spiral used in the movie ‘Seven’. This track features vocals by John Balance (also of Coil) who is now deceased. This may be one of the last things he recorded.

Those of you familiar with my ‘3’ fetish will be unsurprised this is the 3rd track on the full-length. I had nothing to do with selecting which track I remixed.

You may also notice the track repeats the phrase “the malevolent mass”.

History Lesson: I was considering naming the second remix 'the Malevolent M.A.S.' as once upon a time I had an industrial project signed to Hard Records named M.A.S. or the Many Angels with Sticks. Unfortunately, Hard Records nearly went bankrupt and dumped all but their top 3 artists before the full-length was released. Oh, well, "that's what happens". Their advance bought the mixer I used on this project!

As you will hear the track slows down and gets ambient here and there. The label wanted a steady flow to the remix – more dance oriented.

Remix 1 - Twisted Mystic Mix by Occultechnologies 06.30 minutes, 11.9MB

I was going to name this mix 'The 100 Mutant Suns of John Balance' in honor of all the people he has inspired over the course of his career. If not for Coil we may not have Puppy, Meat Beat, NIN and a host of other great artists. I am honored to have had the chance to work with him even if not in the flesh, but in spirit. I feel I did him justice in both mixes. I thought that name might be a little long winded so I instead went with 'Twisted Mystic’, which is a lyric I feel could be used to describe myself.

This mix in particular was built around the vocal. I used my normal modus operandi, which is to compose a whole new song around the vocal track. I hope Danny doesn't take offense at that. I just love to hear vocals placed in a completely foreign environment. I then sprinkled it with some of the samples used in the original for good measure.

The style is very much in sync with the Occultechnologies tracks I've been working up which is melodic EBM with a touch of psychedelic. Good dance floor mix and probably close to what the label had in mind (though far from exactly what they had in mind, I'm sure). Goth/Industrial DJ would have a good time with this remix.

Points of interest:
The main percussion line is my trusty Roland TR-808 overdriven through the mixer.
The aggressive drums are made from one of the drum loops in the original heavily manipulated.
The synth sounds are all patches I made on the Access Virus B.
I threw a little swing into the timing at the point he mentions "twisted mystic".
The “hey!” sample is taken from an 80’s song.
Take a guess. Here is your hint: color - W = -(Demon, Yes)
6.30 minutes in length (3+3 = 6 and one more 3 = 333).

Remix 2 - 3+3+3 Mix by Precarious 09.00 minutes, 16.4MB

Believe it or not, this one is made up nearly entirely of Danny's loops and samples. Couldn't sound more different than the original though. Go figure. That's what happens when you let a madman get his hands on your source material. Tee hee hee! I composed additional percussion in FL Studio 5 (Fruity Loops). Layer after layer after layer (11 total). The percussion is so fucking dense! I love it!

I think this is the best remix I’ve done so far. Strong and long! DJs should dig this track. Very hard! And difficult to categorize. Reminds me a bit of one of the tracks Johny Rotten did with PIL/Left Field - not in style so much as feel. Or maybe one of the Clouser remixes of White Zombie. Maybe I’m just flattering myself.

I love hearing John scream "that's what happens" in this mix! Very powerful...

Points of interest:
The rising string build heard in 2 of the breaks was made from a clip of the opening strings from Sid Vicious' version of 'My Way' reversed and destroyed beyond recognition. Are my punk roots showing? I was going for creepy ‘Close Encounters’ strings.
The snaps and claps at the end were made the old fashioned way - with two hands and a microphone (3 passes - panned L, R & C). Adds a nice subtle live element.
9 minutes in length (3+3+3 or 3 x 3 = 9).

Enjoy!
